Volunteers collecting donations at Sobeys stores for local food bank
The Food Bank of Waterloo Region is hosting the annual Harvest Food Drive this weekend at all local Sobeys stores. The one-day event is an opportunity for the community to donate newly purchased fresh fruit and vegetables to The Food Bank.
The Harvest Food Drive runs from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at all Sobeys locations in Kitchener-Waterloo (a full list on our website). Volunteers will be on-site at each Sobeys location, accepting perishable food and fund donations. Most needed perishable items include: carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, apples, oranges and zucchinis, just to name a few.
"The Harvest Food Drive is an opportunity for us to increase the amount of fresh and frozen food we acquire and distribute to the 100+ community programs and agency partners," said Wendi Campbell, CEO The Food Bank of Waterloo Region". Most people think The Food Bank is only cans and boxes but more than 65% of all food we distribute is fresh or frozen. Events like this, help us raise awareness about how we support the 34,552 people in need by providing a variety of healthy, nutritious food choices."
This annual food drive supports the Fresh Approaches Food Centre; the on-site food processing facility allows staff and volunteers the space to safely process and repackage fresh food donations, extending their lifespan and freshness.
One in 20 households in Waterloo Region is in need of food assistance. Last year, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region distributed 4,536,353 pounds of food to a network of 100+ community programs and agency partners. Providing 3,544,025 meals locally.
